Today I went into Urban Outfitters. It was the first time I'd set foot in one of their stores in close to 3 years with the intention of buying something. There are a few reasons I went in, in part because of personal references: I'd inquired about two people's jeans, they both responded– Levi's, I bought them at UO for $50; One person's boat shoes, purchased at UO; One person's Nikes, got them at UO. Then Michael from ACL's trip to their headquarters, and blah blah blah.
My findings were this: a lot of Japanese people were shopping, a disheveled copy of Wall & Piece was $10 (I decided not to buy it), they had copious amounts of garbage along side a lot of stuff that I would actually wear and at fairly reasonable prices. All this, and I wouldn't go home looking like the illustration below.
End result? I'm confused.
On one hand I like the fact that I can reap the benefits of this long time 'foe,' as I feel their product does actually aline themselves with a lot of my basic retailing needs. But it also seems to prove a lot in regards to the absolute domination the internet has over revealing, developing, and invariably exhausting trends in an all too rapid fashion. I'm frightened to let a corporate entity such as Urban actually appeal to me. There is only one question that comes to mind: What's next?
